Tutorial: Signalling on Defence
Three signals every partnership needs, explained simply.
Attitude: a high card says 'I like this suit, continue'. A low card says 'please switch'.
Count: a high-then-low order shows an even number of cards, low-then-high an odd number. Use it when declarer leads a suit and partner needs to know when to take an ace.
Suit preference: when you give partner a ruff, the size of the card you return asks for a higher- or lower-ranking suit next. Agree these three with your partner and your defence will improve overnight.
