Tutorial: Stayman from Scratch

Step 1 — When partner opens 1NT and you have at least one four-card major and invitational values, bid 2C. This asks opener: do you have a four-card major? Step 2 — Opener replies 2D with no major, 2H with four hearts (and possibly four spades), or 2S with four spades but not four hearts. Step 3 — If you find a fit, raise to the right level. If not, bid notrump at the right level: 2NT to invite, 3NT with game values.
